Spider-Man: Brand New Day to return with new footage

Tom Holland-starrer Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to return to theatres with additional footage, as Sony Pictures looks to push the blockbuster closer to a historic box-office milestone.

According to The Wrap, Sony is planning a theatrical re-release of the film with new scenes. However, the release date and details of the additional footage have not yet been revealed.

The move comes as Brand New Day approaches the $1 billion mark in North American box-office earnings. The film has so far earned around $950.7 million in the region, putting it within striking distance of the milestone.

No single film has yet crossed $1 billion solely at the North American box office. A re-release featuring new footage could therefore give the film another opportunity to reach the historic figure.

The strategy follows Sony’s earlier re-release of Avengers: Endgame Encore, which included additional footage and earned $26 million in its opening weekend in North America, topping the box office seven years after the original release.

Released on July 31, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reportedly grossed nearly $2.5 billion worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing film of all time. It trails Avatar, with $2.92 billion, and Avengers: Endgame, with $2.88 billion.

The film earned $360 million in North America during its opening weekend and $927 million worldwide. On September 16, it also surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing film of all time in North America.

What the new footage will contain remains unclear. However, actress Rosario Dawson could potentially appear in the additional material. Dawson previously revealed that she filmed a scene for the movie that was ultimately left out of the theatrical cut. She plays Claire Temple in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
