Houthi rebels launched ballistic missiles targeting Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, for the third consecutive day on Monday. The Iran-backed Yemeni group also targeted the southwestern city of Khamis Mushait, according to Saudi military officials.
Saudi air defence systems intercepted and destroyed all three missiles before they could reach their targets, Major General Turki Al-Maliki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led military coalition, said in a post on X.
He said one missile was fired towards Riyadh and two towards Khamis Mushait on Monday evening. Residents of Riyadh reported hearing several explosions across the capital.
Meanwhile, Houthi military spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Qasim Saree claimed responsibility for the attacks in a post on X. He said the group had targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and a Saudi military airbase near the Yemeni border in Khamis Mushait using missiles and drones.
Saree also warned international airlines and travellers, claiming that Saudi airspace was unsafe except over the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.
The latest attack came after Houthi strikes on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport on Saturday and Sunday. According to the report, the attacks killed 13 people on Saturday and one on Sunday, while more than 300 people were injured over the two days.
Monday’s launch marked the third consecutive day of missile attacks targeting Riyadh.
