A Dhaka court on Tuesday (October 27) sent the manager of late film actor Manna's family and a technician to jail in connection with a case filed over a fire that broke out while repairing the actor's unused car in the capital's Bashundhara Residential Area.
The Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Aminul Islam Junaid issued the detention order after Sub-Inspector Md Yaur Rahman of Bhatara Police Station, the investigating officer, produced the duo before the court and requested their detention pending further investigation.
The accused were identified as Md Mamun Mondal, 29, manager of Manna's family, and technician Md Sohel Patwary, 37. Both were arrested by police from the Bashundhara area on Tuesday morning following a case filed by the apartment building's manager, Md Gazi Manik Mia.
According to the case statement, the vehicle had been parked unused in the ground-floor garage of a residential building where Manna’s wife resides. Following complaints from the building authorities regarding oil leaks, she instructed manager Mamun to tow the car to an outside workshop for repairs.
However, Mamun allegedly brought technician Sohel to perform the repair work directly inside the building's garage on Monday (October 26). At around 6:00PM, a fire erupted during the repair work, completely destroying the car and damaging an adjacent private vehicle.
The blaze also caused extensive damage to the building's electrical wiring, garage fixtures, CCTV cameras, gate shutters, and glass panels, resulting in estimated losses of around Tk 90 lakh.
Defense counsel Khademul Islam refuted allegations of intentional arson, claiming that the fire stemmed from an unexpected mechanical fault while repairing the vehicle, which had remained idle since actor Manna’s death in 2008.
Bhatara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mazharul Islam confirmed that preliminary findings indicate the fire originated during unauthorized repair work conducted inside the residential garage.
