Musician and cricket organiser Asif Akbar has claimed that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) once faced the risk of an International Cricket Council (ICC) ban over a dispute with the global governing body.

Speaking at the launch of the National Sports Alliance, the sports wing of the National Citizen Party (NCP), in Dhaka on Monday (November 2), Asif said an ICC representative had warned that Bangladesh could face suspension during arbitration talks.

He said a Zimbabwean representative, who had led the country's cricket board during its suspension, warned that Bangladesh could face a similar fate. Asif claimed they avoided further action to protect the country's cricket from a possible two-year ban.

He also criticised the previous and current BCB management, alleging political influence in board formation and irregularities in financial activities.

Asif further called for an independent sports platform to keep politics out of sports and engage young people in sporting activities to tackle juvenile crime and drug addiction.
