Court freezes bank, BO accounts of former DMP officer Biplob Kumar, wife

A Dhaka court has ordered the freezing of 28 bank accounts and two BO (beneficiary owner) accounts held in the names of former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Joint Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarkar and his wife, Hosneara Begum.

The order was issued on Thursday (January 1) by Mohammad Alamgir, acting judge of the Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court, following an application filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). ACC Assistant Director Russell Rony submitted the petition.

According to the ACC, Biplob Kumar Sarkar and others are under investigation for amassing wealth beyond known sources of income through bribery and corruption while in public service and for committing offences under the Money Laundering Prevention Act by concealing the sources of illegal income and purchasing assets in their own and others names.

The commission alleged that attempts were being made to transfer or dispose of funds from the accounts, which could make recovery difficult if not immediately restrained. The court therefore ordered the accounts frozen under relevant provisions of the ACC Rules, 2007 and the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012.

Earlier, on December 9, the court had imposed a travel ban on Biplob Kumar Sarkar, his wife Hosneara Begum, his brother Pronoy Kumar Sarkar and Hosneara’s sister Shahanara Begum.
