Tk 438 million missing from Agrani Bank vault in Chattogram

A total of Tk 4.38 crore has allegedly gone missing from the cash vault of Agrani Bank PLC’s Laldighi East Corporate Branch in Chattogram, with the bank filing a case against two people, including its cash-in-charge, over the alleged embezzlement.
The bank filed the case with Kotwali Police Station on August 10, naming senior officer and cash-in-charge Md Kamrul Hossain, 41, and Md Zafurullah Tanvir, 25, along with several unidentified others. Police arrested both suspects and sent them to jail through a court order.
According to the case statement, Kamrul was responsible for the branch’s cash and vault. A discrepancy was detected on August 9 while officials were reconciling the day’s transactions with the cash stored in the vault. Subsequent checks of the vault records, documents and related accounts found a shortage of Tk 4.38 crore. Kamrul allegedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the discrepancy.
The bank alleged that Kamrul, with the assistance of Tanvir and others, removed the money from the vault and invested it in a cattle farm named “Ishrat Agro” in Uttar Burishchar area of Hathazari. The farm currently has around 50 to 60 cattle, according to the case statement.
The statement further alleges that bundles of Tk 1,000 notes were manipulated by placing smaller-denomination notes inside them, making the bundles appear to contain the full amount from the outside.
However, Tanvir’s father, Azim Ullah, denied the allegations and claimed his son had no connection with Agrani Bank. He said Tanvir had been running a cattle farm before the incident and alleged that he was falsely implicated in the case. He also claimed that there was no bank record or other evidence showing that Tk 4.38 crore had been handed over to his son.
Chattogram Judge Court lawyer Anwar Hossain said such a large shortage from a bank vault should not be investigated solely from the perspective of the cash-in-charge’s responsibility. He said branch management oversight and the bank’s internal control mechanisms should also be examined.
Kotwali Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Iqbal Hossain said the two named accused had been arrested and sent to jail in connection with the case. Police seized two mobile phones and a 64GB pen drive containing WhatsApp communications and related records from them. The investigation is ongoing.
