AMTALI, BARGUNA, Jan 19: Security has been tightened across the Barguna-1 constituency-covering Amtali, Taltali and Barguna Sadar-as the Bangladesh Navy has intensified patrols ahead of the 13th national parliamentary elections.
Acting on directives from the relevant authorities, a large number of naval personnel have been deployed in key areas to help maintain law and order, ensure voters can exercise their franchise without fear, and facilitate a free, fair and impartial election. Regular navy patrols have been visible across the three upazilas, particularly on major roads, in market areas, public gathering spots and other vulnerable locations. Checkposts have also been set up, with routine searches and operations being carried out.
Local residents said fear had gripped the area for a long time due to rising incidents of extortion, criminal activities and drug-related offences. They expressed relief at the heightened presence of the navy, saying it has restored a sense of security among the public.
According to local sources, the navy's firm stance has spread panic among extortionists, criminals and drug traders, forcing many of them to go into hiding. Residents also noted that criminal activities have declined noticeably due to regular patrols and the establishment of checkposts.
The deployment is being carried out in coordination with other law enforcement and auxiliary forces, including police, Ansar, RAB, BGB and the Coast Guard. Special surveillance has been strengthened at polling centres, key installations and sensitive areas. At the same time, patrol operations and intelligence monitoring have been increased to prevent any form of disorder or violence.
Authorities said strict legal action would be taken against anyone attempting to create unrest, engage in violence or commit unlawful acts during the election period.
