Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Monday said those who hacked his social media account to spread obscene content in his name had been identified, adding that the masterminds behind the incident would soon be exposed.
He made the remarks while addressing an election rally at the Chattogram Port College ground around 7:30pm as the chief guest.
Dr Shafiqur also pledged to ensure the safety and dignity of women at political programmes, saying his party would protect working women “even at the cost of our lives.”
Referring to women as “mothers and sisters,” he urged political activists to show respect and refrain from harassment.
Alleging a deliberate attempt to malign him, the Jamaat chief said his hacked social media account had been used to circulate obscene content. “Those directly involved have already been identified, and the forces behind the incident will also be brought to light,” he said.
Referring to political repression, Dr Shafiqur claimed that persecution against Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists began on October 28, 2006, during the Awami League-led political unrest.
He alleged that after coming to power “through the back door,” the Awami League carried out widespread repression, for which the party had already paid a heavy price.
He said Jamaat-e-Islami remained patient during that period and later stood beside families of those killed during the July movement, as well as flood-affected communities. However, he accused another political party of engaging in extortion and land grabbing.
Dr Shafiqur also alleged that despite repeated appeals to stop violence and extortion, that party continued such activities, claiming that more than 230 of its own members had been killed in internal conflicts.
He further alleged that Jamaat supporters, including women, were being targeted, with threats and harassment aimed at discouraging political participation. He said intimidation and false allegations would not deter Jamaat-e-Islami from continuing its political movement.
“Our goal is to build a just and fair Bangladesh based on Islamic principles,” he added.
The rally was presided over by Chattogram city Jamaat Ameer Nazrul Islam. Central Nayeb-e-Ameer ANM Shamsul Islam and other senior central and local leaders also addressed the gathering.
Earlier in the day, Dr Shafiqur addressed election rallies at Padua ACM High School ground in Lohagara upazila and later in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram.
