Mongla port cargo up 79pc; 31 ships handle 21,651 TEUs in 7-month

Mongla Port, the country’s second-largest seaport, has recorded a significant rise in maritime activity in the first seven months of the current fiscal year (2025-26). A total of 31 foreign commercial container ships visited the port, handling 21,651 TEUs of containers; a 79.19% increase compared to the same period last year.

During the 2024-25 fiscal year, the port handled 21,456 TEUs of containers over the same seven-month period.

Speaking to reporters, Senior Deputy Manager of Mongla Port, Md. Makruzzaman, said that from July 2025 to January 2026, a total of 515 foreign commercial ships arrived at the port. 

During this period, 6,404 reconditioned vehicles were imported and cargo handling reached 8.266 million metric tons, representing a 25.03% increase compared to the same period last year.

Md. Makruzzaman congratulated the newly elected government following 13th National Parliamentary elections, expressing optimism that under the new leadership, Mongla Port would continue to see increased ship arrivals, imports and exports, contributing significantly to the national economy.

He also noted that although five months remain in the fiscal year, the port has already surpassed last year’s container handling figures.

To improve port facilities for users, three new operational anchor berths; H-1, H-2 and H-3, have been inaugurated at Hiran Point. 

Trial operations have already been successfully completed for 16 commercial ships with a 9.00-meter draft. These berths can now accommodate vessels up to 200 meters in length and 9.00 meters in draft for cargo operations.

Currently, Mongla Port handles imports of essential commodities such as food grains, cement raw materials, clinker, fertilizers, automobiles, machinery, rice, wheat, coal, oil, stones, maize, oilseeds and LPG. 

The port also facilitates the export of Bangladeshi products including white fish, shrimp, jute and jute products, frozen food, crab, clay tiles, silk fabric and other general merchandise, according to Md. Makruzzaman.
