BAGHA, RAJSHAHI, Feb 20: Rajshahi-6 (Bagha-Charghat) lawmaker Abu Sayeed Chand has declared a hardline position against extortion and illegal activities, saying he does not want to follow the path of the Awami League (AL).
Speaking at a reception at Bagha Upazila Health Complex on Thursday, Chand said, "The way AL went, BNP does not want to go that way. Former MP and state minister Shahriar Alam fled the area, but I will not. I want to stay with the people, even if only for 10 days, to ensure peace."
The event was chaired by Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Ashaduzzaman Asad. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shammi Akter, Bagha OC Serajul Haque, and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Sabiha Sultana also spoke.
Announcing zero tolerance against drugs, Chand urged police to take strict action, even against BNP men involved in phensedyl trade. "If any leader comes to lobby for them, arrest him too.
There will be no compromise with drugs," he said, warning police officers against collusion with traffickers.
Criticising cases filed over "abandoned" drugs seized in BGB raids, Chand asked, "You seized the goods, but where are the accused? Will people believe this?"
He gave doctors six months to improve healthcare services so that patients are not forced to seek treatment abroad. "Do doctors not know how to study, or did they just copy to pass exams? We want quality treatment in our own country," he said, assuring financial support if needed.
The MP also issued stern warnings against illegal sand mining, usury, and land grabbing. "I don't need houses in Dhaka or abroad. I will not shelter extortionists. Even if they are from my party, send them to jail," he said.
