Separate courts in Khulna and Pirojpur districts have sentenced 10 people to life imprisonment for separate murder incidents.
KHULNA: Judge Nusrat Jabin of the Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge First Court on Wednesday sentenced eight people to life imprisonment and fined each Tk 50,000, in default, to serve one more year in prison, over the killing of two men in 2010.
The Judge also acquitted nine charge sheeted accused as the allegation against them were not proved. Bench Assistant of the court Shubhendu Roy Chowdhury confirmed the verdict.
According to the court, the convicts - Nuruddin Md Raju alias Indian Raju, Jahangir Hossain, Sohel Sikder, Kalu Sheikh alias Rajib, Siddiq, Wasim alias Dada Wasim and Jabbar except Faruk Sheikh alias “Gari Faruk” allegedly fled the court premises after learning about the verdict in advance.
According to the prosecution, Md Haidar alias Kana Haidar, son of Sheikh Mohiuddin of Khan Mohammadpur in Rupsha Upazila, had married Marzina Khatun, daughter of Faruk of Banargati Matiapul area under Sonadanga Police Station (PS), and had been living there after the marriage. Haidar had longstanding disputes with several accused named in the case.
The accused allegedly attacked Haidar with sharp weapons on February 28, 2010, at around 3pm. Hearing his screams, his brother-in-law Tarikul Islam Piku rushed to the scene but was also hacked by the assailants.
Haidar’s wife Marzina Khatun was injured while trying to stop the attackers. Haidar died on the way to the hospital, while Tarikul succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards.
Following the incident, Haidar’s brother, Tayab Ali, filed a murder case with Sonadanga PS. After investigation, police submitted a charge-sheet against 17 accused on August 13, 2010. Charges were framed by the court on January 27, 2011.
PIROJPUR: Senior District and Sessions Judge Md Muzibur Rahman on Wednesday noon sentenced two people to life imprisonment and fined each Tk 10,000 for killing a man in the district.
The convicts are Md Kamrul Akon, son of Yunus Akon of Ghopkhali Village and Shohag Hawlader, son of Tuku Mia Hawlader of Charokkhali Village under Mathbaria Upazila of the district. Another accused Md Yusuf Akon got released as the charge against him was not proved.
According to the case document, the convicts along with unidentified two to three persons killed Rakibul, son of Halim Kazi of Betmor Bazar area of the upazila, with Chinese axe over previous enmity on May 17, 2015. Mathbaria Police Station submitted a charge sheet before the court accusing them. After examining case documents, evidences and witness and medical reports, the court declared the verdict.
