Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam has announced that the government will bring about a radical transformation in the management of Mongla Port within the next 180 days.

The minister made this announcement during a media briefing on Saturday after his first official visit to Mongla Port.

He said the port has been given special priority in the government's 180-day action plan, and visible changes would be evident within six months.

Sheikh Rabiul Alam said that considering the port's importance to the national economy and foreign trade, various challenges would be identified and discussed with the Prime Minister. Development initiatives would then be undertaken based on the Prime Minister's directives, which would positively impact employment, connectivity and the overall economy of the region.

The minister said the government plans to make Mongla Port a hub for import-export activities by harnessing the vast potential of the southwestern region.

He added that if necessary facilities are ensured to utilize the port's full capacity, Mongla could become as efficient and fully operational as Chittagong Port.

He emphasized that there would be no disparity in development between Chittagong and Mongla ports. The government aims to transform Mongla into a modern and capable port by utilizing its potential to the fullest, he added.

When asked about reviving cancelled or suspended development agreements with neighboring countries, the minister said those agreements would be reconsidered with national interest as the top priority. Any deal that previously harmed the country would be thoroughly evaluated before being reinstated.

The minister also highlighted the need for a suspension bridge over the Mongla River, saying the matter would be considered on priority.

Additionally, the government would introduce multiple trains on the Mongla-Khulna railway route by adding new coaches and engines soon.

State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr Sheikh Foridul Islam, Shipping Ministry Secretary Dr Nurunnahar Chowdhury, and Mongla Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral Shahin Rahman were present during the visit.
