Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Bangladesh Baharul Alam has directed field-level police officers to take strict action against extortion, mugging and drug-related crimes.
He said law and order must be maintained at any cost. Regardless of political affiliation, anyone involved in extortion, terrorism or narcotics offences must face legal action.
The IGP issued the directives on Sunday during a virtual meeting from Police Headquarters with all unit chiefs, metropolitan police commissioners, range deputy inspectors general (DIGs) and district superintendents of police.
He also instructed officers not to allow any activities by banned political parties. Anyone attempting to create disorder must be dealt with in accordance with the law, he said.
The police chief further directed the Highway Police to take stringent measures to prevent highway robberies. "Highway dacoity must be stopped at any cost," he stressed. In addition to the Highway Police, district police units were also instructed to strengthen patrols and take preventive steps to curb robberies on highways.
Additional Inspectors General concerned were present at the Police Headquarters during the virtual meeting.
