A mobile court in Chattogram's Hathazari upazila has fined two brick kilns a total of Tk 4 lakh for cutting topsoil from agricultural land.
The drive was conducted by Shahed Arman, assistant commissioner (Land) and executive magistrate of Hathazari in the Charia area of Mirzapur Union of the upazila on Saturday afternoon.
It is reported that a raid was conducted against KBC Brickfield and KBM Brickfield located in Chariya area after allegations of cutting fertile topsoil from agricultural land. As the allegations were found to be true during the raid, a fine of Tk 2 lakh each was imposed on the two brickfields under the relevant section of the Balumahal and Soil Management Act, 2010.
In default of payment of the fine, a one-month non-commissioned prison sentence was ordered.
The convicts are Md Fazlu, 37, a resident of Noakhali district, and Md Yunus Ali, 39, a resident of Satkhira district.
Shahed Arman said that regular operations will be conducted against such illegal activities in the interest of protecting the fertility of agricultural land and preserving the environment and this operation will continue in the public interest.
