An on-duty Coast Guard official allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest with his service arm at the Coast Guard West Zone headquarters in Bagerhat’s Mongla upazila on Wednesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Saleh Ahmed, 42, a member of the Coast Guard stationed at the Dwigraj-based West Zone headquarters.
According to sources, the incident occurred around 7:40 AM while he was on duty at the guardroom. Saleh reportedly placed his service arm against his chest and fired, leaving himself critically injured.
Fellow Coast Guard members and officials quickly rescued him and rushed him to Khulna Upasham Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Mongla Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Sheikh Shahinur Rahman confirmed the incident and said that the body has been sent to Bagerhat General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
“An unnatural death case will has been filed,” added the OC.
