The government has decided to abolish the lottery-based admission system for schools from the next academic year.

Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon made the announcement at a press conference held at Ministry of Education on Monday.

The lottery-based admission system was initially introduced only for admissions to Class I. From 2011 academic year, government secondary schools that had primary sections were required to admit students to Class I through a lottery instead of admission tests.

The following year, the same system was extended to private schools as well. However, admissions from Class II to Class IX continued to be conducted through examinations at that time.

Later, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the government introduced the lottery system for admissions in all classes in 2021 academic year to avoid gatherings and ensure safety.

Since then, students have been admitted to schools through the lottery system across all grades.

The government has now decided to discontinue the method from the next year.
