Election campaigning for the Bogura-6 and Sherpur-3 parliamentary constituencies formally began on Monday, following the allocation of electoral symbols to candidates by returning officers on Sunday.
The campaign will continue until 7:30am on April 7, ahead of polling scheduled for April 9, according to the Election Commission.
Voting in the two constituencies was initially postponed during the 13th parliamentary election held on February 12 after the death of a valid candidate in one of the seats. The Election Commission (EC) later announced a fresh schedule for the polls.
In the Sherpur-3 constituency, Islami Andolon Bangladesh candidate Abul Taleb Md Saifuddin withdrew his candidature, leaving four contenders: Md Masudur Rahman of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, independent candidate Md Aminul Islam, Md Mahmudul Haque Rubel of the BNP, and Md Mizanur Rahman of the Socialist Party of Bangladesh (Marxist).
In Bogura-6, three candidates are contesting: Md Abidur Rahman of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Md Rezaul Karim Badsha of the BNP, and Md Al Alim Talukder of the Bangladesh Development Party.
During the February 12 election, BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman won the Bogura-6 seat.
However, as the law prohibits holding two parliamentary seats simultaneously, he retained Dhaka-17 and vacated Bogura-6. The Election Commission subsequently declared the seat vacant and scheduled a fresh election.
Returning officers have completed the allocation of symbols to candidates in both constituencies. Polling on April 9 will be held from 7:30am to 4:30pm.
