Authorities have cancelled the route permits of two passenger launches following a collision at Sadarghat Launch Terminal in the capital.
State Minister for Shipping and Bridges Rajib Ahsan announced the decision on Wednesday (March 18) after visiting the accident site.
The vessels—MV Asha-Jawa-5 and MV Zakir Samrat-3—have had their permits revoked based on preliminary findings of responsibility, he said.
Two separate investigation committees have been formed by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) and the Ministry of Shipping. The committees have been asked to submit their reports within three working days.
The state minister said those found responsible would face the highest legal consequences.
"Negligence on waterways will not be tolerated. Exemplary punishment will be ensured to prevent such incidents in the future."
Regarding casualties, the state minister said the family of the deceased would receive maximum financial assistance, while the injured are being provided with proper medical care. An injured pregnant woman and her unborn child are now out of danger.
The collision took place on Wednesday afternoon while passengers were boarding the vessels at Sadarghat.
