RAJSHAHI, Mar 25: A festive atmosphere has gripped Bagha Upazila of Rajshahi as the historic Eid fair, dating back nearly 500 years, is underway.

On Monday, DIG of Rajshahi Range Mohammad Shahajan Ali visited the fair, expressing satisfaction at the vibrant setting and the presence of thousands of visitors. Bagha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Serajul Haque was also present at the fair.

Earlier, Rajshahi District BNP Convener and senior central BNP leader Abu Sayeed Chand MP joined the grand Eid congregation. After prayers, he exchanged greetings with political leaders and worshippers, drawing a warm welcome from locals.

Lease committee President Md Shafiqul Islam briefed DIG Shahajan Ali, noting that past irregularities under the guise of the religious fair-such as indecent activities-have now been eliminated. He credited the current MP, the shrine committee, upazila administration, and Bagha police for ensuring a clean, orderly environment.

For locals, Eid is synonymous with joy, and the traditional fair amplifies that spirit. Residents say the fair has been nurtured for generations, becoming a source of pride for Bagha. Beyond the fair itself, the shrine-centred Urs Mubarak, the Sultan-era Bagha Shahi Mosque, the museum, the pond, and the massive Eid congregation all add layers of cultural and spiritual significance.

Entertainment remains a major attraction, with circus shows, Ferris wheels, radar rides, train tours, motorcycle stunts in the "well of death," magic shows, and swings drawing crowds of all ages. Toy stalls, sweet shops, and vendors from distant districts further enliven the fair, turning it into a bustling marketplace alongside its religious and cultural dimensions.

Members of civil society observed that the fair has undergone a transformation in recent years. Complaints of obscenity, gambling, and excessive toll collection have been addressed, restoring discipline and ensuring a family-friendly environment. Worshippers and visitors alike now participate with comfort and joy, while the initiative of local administration has earned widespread praise.
With its blend of heritage, spirituality, and entertainment, the Bagha Eid fair continues to shine as a beacon of tradition, drawing thousands to celebrate in harmony.
