A stray dog died after suffering an electric shock in rainwater on the Dhaka University (DU) campu, sparking concern among students over electrical safety and infrastructure maintenance.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night near Mall Chattar, adjacent to Surjo Sen Hall, during waterlogged conditions following rainfall.

The matter came to public attention after a video was shared by political science student Esrafil Alam on social media.

In his post, Alam described witnessing the dog collapse and die instantly after stepping into electrified water, with smoke reportedly rising from its body. He warned that others nearby were about to step into the same area and could have suffered similar harm if not alerted in time.

“I myself might have been electrocuted had the dog not been there,” he wrote, calling on the university administration to take responsibility and ensure safer campus conditions.

The video and accompanying account quickly circulated among students, triggering widespread concern about exposed wiring and hazardous conditions during heavy rain. Many students highlighted the risks posed by standing water in areas with potentially faulty electrical connections.

In response, the university’s proctor told The Daily Observer that immediate measures have been taken.

According to the administration, additional safety precautions and monitoring have been introduced to prevent similar incidents.

However, students continue to demand proper inspections of electrical systems, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas of the campus. Authorities have yet to release detailed findings about the source of the electrical leakage that caused the fatal shock.

The incident has intensified calls for improved infrastructure oversight to ensure the safety of both people and animals on campus.
