Intern doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) have threatened a 24-hour work abstention if the attackers involved in Wednesday's clash are not arrested within 24 hours.

The Intern Doctors' Society, a representative body for medical interns, announced the strike at a press briefing on Thursday. The emergency service was briefly halted on Wednesday following an attack by some Dhaka University students on the hospital's interns.

"If the attackers are not arrested and punished within the deadline, intern doctors across the country will go on a simultaneous strike," the organisation said. Their demands include the deployment of armed police to ensure hospital security and strict disciplinary action against those involved. Earlier, DMCH formed a six-member inquiry committee to investigate the clash. The committee is expected to submit its findings by Saturday (July 11).

The incident began at 5:30 pm when a 2023-24 session DU Botany student, Sanim, arrived at the emergency unit suffering from acute pancreatitis. An on-duty physician, Dr Rony, prescribed three injections - Algin, Nalban-2, and Cosec - which were unavailable at the hospital.
