
NARAYANGANJ, Apr 24:Local residents in Sonargaon Upazila of Narayanganj held a human chain and protest on Friday afternoon, demanding the arrest of drug dealers and an end to rising drug-related activities in the area.
The programme was organised at Taltala area under Jampur Union by locals, where participants raised slogans calling for strict action against drug traders.
Leaders of BNP and its affiliated organisations also joined the demonstration. Among them were Sonargaon Upazila BNP Vice-President and upazila chairman candidate Al Mujahid Mallik, Jampur Union BNP General Secretary Azharul Islam Sanwar, Union BNP Senior Vice-President Gias Uddin Bhuiyan, Sonargaon Upazila JASAS President Amir Hossain, and leaders from Jubo Dal, Krishak Dal and Sramik Dal.
Speakers at the human chain said drug abuse and trafficking have increased significantly in different parts of Jampur Union, posing a serious threat to society.
They alleged that drug dealers and users are known in the locality, and urged residents to assist law enforcement agencies in identifying and handing them over to police.
"Drugs are destroying families and ruining young lives. We must protect our society from this danger," speakers said, calling for immediate action.
After the human chain, the protesters brought out a procession that started from Taltala Bazar Police Investigation Centre and marched along the Madanpur-Araihazar road.
The programme saw participation from BNP leaders, activists and people from different professions.
Organisers said the movement will continue until effective steps are taken to control drugs in the area.
