Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that the government is undertaking canal dredging projects to tackle waterlogging, emphasizing the urgent need to manage water resources more sustainably.

Speaking at a civic gathering in Sylhet on Saturday, he noted that excessive groundwater extraction, both for drinking and agricultural purposes, has become a major concern.

''Our heavy reliance on underground water is pushing the situation toward a dangerous level. If we want to tackle this now, the first step is to re-excavate canals.''

The Prime Minister also announced plans to quickly operationalize a 250-bed hospital in Sylhet and upgrade it to a 1,200-bed facility in the near future, aiming to improve healthcare access in the region.

He assured that closed factories would be reopened to boost employment and strengthen the country's economic base.

Tarique Rahman further revealed that the government is considering establishing an IT park in Sylhet to support technological growth and job creation.
