Rampal Thermal Power Plant produced over 760 million units of electricity in April, recording its highest monthly generation amid a severe heatwave and surging power demand nationwide.

The information was disclosed in a press release issued on Sunday by the project’s Deputy General Manager (Public Relations) Anowarul Azim.

According to the release, the plant operated at an average plant load factor of around 80 per cent throughout the month. During the first week of April, when demand in the national grid peaked due to extreme heat, the plant generated electricity at 97 per cent of its capacity, marking a significant milestone.

The plant is currently supplying more than 9 per cent of the country’s total electricity demand, added the release.

Anowarul Azim said the ultra-supercritical technology-based facility is being operated with high efficiency while maintaining environmental safeguards, including the use of advanced flue gas desulphurisation systems to reduce emissions.

He also said such large-scale power plants would play a crucial role in strengthening the country’s energy sector by ensuring reliable power supply and supporting economic growth.

The 1,320MW coal-fired Maitree Super Thermal Power Project, implemented under the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Limited, is located in Bagerhat’s Rampal upazila, about 14 kilometres from the Sundarbans.
