Another child rape case has been filed in the country, now in Dinajpur's Phulbari upazila, over raping a 12-year-old girl and leaving her three months pregnant .
A case has been filed with Phulbari Police Station on Friday while the accused 65-year-old has fled immediately.
According to the case statement, the accused, identified as Nurul Islam Dayal, frequently visited the victim’s maternal uncle's house where she resided.
Taking advantage of the family's extreme poverty, Dayal allegedly coerced the child into a physical relationship through various inducements. The situation escalated on the evening of May 5, when he reportedly took her to a local cornfield, violated her and threatened to kill her if she disclosed the incident.
Local sources suggest that after the pregnancy was revealed, influential individuals pressured the family to settle the matter privately with money and undergo an abortion.
However, the family refused the compromise, prompting the victim's mother, Abida Khatun, to file the complaint on Friday.
Phulbari Police Station oifficer-in-charge (OC) Md. Abdul Latif Shah, confirmed that they have received the formal complaint and are conducting raids to apprehend the fugitive.
Legal procedures, including the victim’s medical examination, are currently underway, the OC stated.
