Students of Eden Mohila College staged a late-night protest demanding a complete ban on student politics on campus, following tensions over the removal of graffiti calling for a "politics-free campus."
The demonstration began around 11:00 PM on Saturday when students from Eden College and the proposed Hazrat Rabeya Basri female dormitory reportedly broke the locks of the college’s main gate and marched inside the campus.
A student, Smriti Akter, said protesters also attempted to break several campus gates during the demonstration. The students demanded an end to all forms of political influence within the college.
Around 12:30 AM, Lalbagh Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md Yasin Ali said the protesters wanted a politics-free campus and later returned inside after demonstrating for some time.
Earlier in the evening, graffiti reading "Politics-Free Campus" at the college gate had reportedly been painted over, which students believe triggered the protest.
Videos circulating on social media showed demonstrators tearing down banners and festoons associated with the student wing of a political party and attempting to set them on fire.
Repeated attempts to contact college principal Hosne Ara for comment were unsuccessful.
