A shell-like object recovered from a pond during excavation work in Dinajpur’s Birol upazila was destroyed under the supervision of the Bangladesh Army on Tuesday, 11 days after its recovery.
According to local sources, the rusted and abandoned cartridge-like object was recovered on May 1 from a pond owned by Mohsin Ali, son of late Abdul Haque, at Agra (Siyapur) village under Palashbari union while excavation work was underway.
Following the recovery, police kept the object under special security measures to ensure public safety and avoid any potential risk.
Later, a team from the 66th Infantry Division Headquarters of Rangpur Cantonment arrived at the bank of the Punarbhaba River in Sakairdanga area of Birol and destroyed the object through a controlled explosion on Tuesday afternoon, eyewitnesses said.
Locals estimated the object to be around 9.5 inches in length and 6.5 inches in circumference.
Palashbari Union Parishad’s ward no 6 member Rabiul Islam confirmed the incident.
