Professor Dr Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, former Pro-Vice Chancellor of Jamalpur Science and Technology University (JSTU), has formally joined as the eighth Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University.
He signed the joining letter at the Vice-Chancellor’s office on Saturday, completing the official assumption of office.
Earlier on May 14, 2026, the Ministry of Education appointed him as VC for a four-year term under Section 10 (1) of the Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) Act, 2006, with approval from the President and Chancellor.
After joining, the vice-chancellor paid tribute to the “Chiro Unnoto Momo Shir” monument, the sculpture of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and the foundation plaque laid by former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia on March 1, 2005.
A prayer was later offered seeking peace and prosperity for the university, the country and the world.
Several faculty deans, including Prof Dr Mohammad Imdadul Huda from Arts, Prof Dr AHM Kamal from Science and Engineering, Prof Dr Md Bakhtiar Uddin from Social Science, Prof Dr Sakhawat Hossain Sarkar from Business Administration, Prof Muhammad Irfan Aziz from Law and Acting Registrar Prof Dr Md Mizanur Rahman, along with department heads, officials, employees and students, were present.
Later, the vice-chancellor held a meeting with deans, department heads and office chiefs at the conference room adjacent to his office and delivered a brief speech.
At the beginning of his remarks, the vice-chancellor expressed remembrance of the Almighty and prayed for the departed souls of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and all those who sacrificed their lives in movements and struggles from 1952 to 2024. He also expressed respect for honourable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
“I am a teacher by profession. I seek your cooperation, empathy and constructive suggestions. If everyone performs their duties properly, this university will move forward in a systematic way,” he said.
“We do not want to use students or instigate them. We want to build students. Human beings have both merits and demerits, so do not try to fill my ears with complaints about others,” he added.
He further said that ideological differences are natural and no one should hide their beliefs or become “hybrid”, adding that he aims to develop the university into a modern, quality and student-friendly institution with collective support.
Born on December 10, 1975, in Mukundabari village under Madarganj upazila of Jamalpur district, Prof Mosharraf passed SSC and HSC from the Dhaka Board with first division results from Jamalpur.
He completed both his BSc (1997) and MSc (1998) in Botany from the University of Chittagong, securing first class first position. He obtained his PhD in Biotechnology from Panjab University, India, in 2010.
He joined the University of Chittagong (CU) as a lecturer in 2003 and was later promoted to assistant professor in 2004, associate professor in 2011 and professor in 2015. In 2024, he joined Jamalpur Science and Technology University as pro-vice chancellor.
He has authored 10 books and published 53 research articles in national and international journals. He has also received several international awards, including the Young Scientist Gold Medal-2010 from the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences and The World Academy of Sciences and the Usha Vish Memorial Award-2019 from India.
