Thirty-one students of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU) have been temporarily suspended following a violent clash and vandalism on the campus.
The university administration took the decision during the 27th meeting of the Accommodation and Discipline Board on Thursday night. An official order issued by the Registrar's Office confirmed the matter.
According to university sources, a clash broke out between the residents of Shahid Noor Hossain Hall and Shahid Abrar Fahad Hall on Thursday afternoon, leaving seven people injured, including an assistant proctor.
Following the incident, aggrieved students of Noor Hossain Hall blocked the Rangpur-Dinajpur highway for nearly six hours, demanding justice. They cleared the road after receiving assurances from the university administration.
Later that night, the disciplinary board reviewed the incident. The suspension order stated that around 2:30 pm on Thursday, over a hundred students from Shahid Abrar Fahad Hall, armed with local weapons and sticks, launched a sudden attack on Noor Hossain Hall. The attackers went on a rampage, vandalizing furniture, CCTV cameras and other university properties, including the hall's prayer room and assaulted an assistant proctor and several students.
Based on video footage and preliminary evidence, 31 students were found guilty of the disruption.
University authorities stated that the students were suspended under Sections 14 and 15 of the University Student Discipline Ordinance for engaging in unethical activities, breaching law and order and damaging government property. The suspension order comes into effect immediately.
HSTU Registrar (Additional Charge) Professor Dr. Md. Abu Hasan confirmed the suspension of the 31 students.
