Chattogram-7 (Rangunia) lawmaker Humam Quader Chowdhury on Saturday said the Awami League, whose activities have been banned, would not be allowed to engage in politics in the country as long as BNP leaders and activists remain active.
He made the remarks while attending a prayer programme and paying tribute at the first grave of late president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman in Rangunia, Chattogram, marking the former president’s martyrdom anniversary.
Speaking at the programme, Humam Qader thanked BNP leaders and activists who had joined the event from different parts of Chattogram on behalf of the people of Rangunia.
Describing the occasion as a historic day, he said BNP leaders and supporters had been visiting the site regularly for the past 45 years.
“Whenever there is a national party programme in Dhaka, we traditionally begin our observance here through prayers and remembrance,” he said.
The lawmaker also alleged that BNP leaders and activists had faced various obstacles during the tenure of the previous government while attempting to visit the site.
“Even a few years ago, when we came here to offer prayers and pay tribute, we encountered numerous restrictions. At times, we had to come under the cover of darkness or at dawn. There was always a fear of attacks,” he claimed.
Humam Qader further said those responsible for attacks on BNP activists would be brought to justice.
Standing in front of Ziaur Rahman’s grave, he reiterated his party’s hardline stance against the Awami League and called on BNP leaders and activists to remain united.
