
THAKURGAON, June 20: Freedom fighter (FF), politician and journalist Syed Merajul Hossain was laid to rest with state honour at Senua graveyard in the Thakurgaon town on Saturday afternoon following two separate Namaz-e-Janaza.
The first Janaza was held on the premises of Thakurgaon Press Club, while the second at the mosque adjacent to the graveyard.
Hossain passed away at a hospital in Dhaka on Friday afternoon due to age-related complications.
He was 83.
He was the founding principal of Abdur Rashid College in Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila and a former president of Thakurgaon Press Club. He also served for many years as the Thakurgaon correspondent of The Daily Observer and the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
A long-time political activist, Hossain was actively involved with the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and served as president of its Thakurgaon District unit.
He is survived by two daughters and a host of relatives, colleagues, admirers and well-wishers.
On hearing the death news, leaders and activists of different political parties, along with representatives of socio-cultural organisations, attended his funeral and paid their last respect.
