Police arrested the imam of a local mosque for allegedly raping a minor girl in Trishal Upazila of Mymensingh on Saturday night.
The arrested person is Mohammad Shahinur Islam, 28, son of Md Mozammel Hossain of Gopalpur Upazila in Tangail. He is the imam and khatib of a local mosque in Trishal.
The victim’s father lodged a case with Trishal Police Station (PS) accusing the imam.
According to the case statement, the five-and-a-half-year-old girl along with two other children used to go to the mosque to learn Arabic from Shahinur Islam. On Saturday afternoon, as she was remarkably late to return home, her mother went to the mosque in search of the child, and caught the imam red-handed while he was violating the girl.
Hearing screams of the victim’s mother, local people rushed in and confined Shahinur. They then beat him up, and later, handed him over to the police.
The victim girl was taken to Trishal Upazila Health Complex first, where the on-duty doctor referred her to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Officer-in-Charge of Trishal PS Md Mansur Ahmed confirmed the incident, saying that the accused imam will soon be produced before the court.
