Locals staged a protest by blocking Dhaka-Barishal Highway, demanding justice over the killing of a youth who was shot during a clash between residents of two villages in Bhanga, Faridpur.
The deceased, Sumon Sheikh (20), was a resident of Kapuria Sadardi village in Ward No. 9 of Bhanga Municipality.
The police conducted an overnight drive and detained 17 people in connection with the incident.
On Wednesday July 1, 2026, locals blocked Dhaka-Barishal Highway and demonstrated, demanding the arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the killing of Sumon Sheikh. Traffic on the highway was disrupted for some time due to the blockade.
Meanwhile, police conducted an overnight operation on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, and detained 17 people on suspicion of involvement in the clash. On Wednesday afternoon, they were sent to jail through the court.
Officer-in-Charge of Bhanga Police Station Mohammad Mizanur Rahman said that a young man named Sumon Sheikh was killed during the clash between the two groups at night.
He said that 17 people had been detained following an operation in connection with the incident. He further said that on Wednesday, angry villagers blocked the Dhaka�"Barishal Highway demanding justice for Sumon’s killing. Preparations are underway to file a murder case over the incident.
Local resident Ismail Munshi said, “We have given the administration 24 hours. We strongly demand the arrest of Sajib Matubbar, one of the main accused in the clash, and that he be brought under the law.”
Attempts were made several times to contact Enayet Sardar of the rival Hasamdia village by phone for his comments on the incident, but his mobile phone was found switched off. However, Upazila Swechchhasebak Dal Member Secretary Sajib Matubbar claimed that the allegation against him of shooting and killing Sumon Sheikh was completely false and fabricated.
According to local residents and police, around four to five months ago, several youths, including Ebadul, the nephew of Ismail Munshi of Kapuria Sadardi village, were taken in front of the municipality office and beaten by several youths, including Faisal Sardar of Hasamdia village.
The matter was later settled. Following that incident, on Tuesday evening, when Ebadul went near the Hasamdia Bridge, he was again assaulted by Faisal Sardar and his associates from Hasamdia village. Later, people from both sides became involved in a clash on the highway at night using locally made weapons, shields, spears, and flashlights. At one stage, residents of Hasamdia village made announcements over loudspeakers and engaged in a clash that lasted for about three and a half hours. People from several villages joined both sides during the clash.
