Two friends were killed after a truck smashed their motorcycle on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur early Friday.
The deceased were identified as Md Soleman Sikder, 22, son of Hasin Sikder of Sarengkandi village under Jazira Police Station in Shariatpur, and Kawsar Hossain, 28, son of Giar Uddin of South Mandail area in Keraniganj. They were travelling from Keraniganj to Trishal in Mymensingh to visit a friend‘s house, police said.
According to police and family members, the victims, along with their friends Sajjad and Arif, left Keraniganj on two motorcycles for Trishal in Mymensingh. When they reached the Jainabazar area of Sreepur on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at around 2AM, a truck coming from the opposite direction rammed into the motorcycle carrying Kawsar and Soleman.
Both friends died on the spot. After being informed, police recovered the bodies and took those to the police station. The truck driver fled the scene, leaving the vehicle behind.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamruzzaman of Maona Highway Police Station said police recovered the two bodies from the scene and seized both the truck involved in the accident and the damaged motorcycle. He said the truck driver managed to escape after the crash. Legal proceedings in connection with the incident were underway.
