The Election Commission (EC) is planning to hold Union Parishad (UP), municipality and upazila parishad elections in phases between October this year and March 2027, with city corporation polls to follow.
According to EC sources, the elections are likely to be organised region-wise, with longer intervals between phases than in previous elections to ease administrative pressure and improve election management.
Officials said the commission would be able to complete any local government election within 45 days once the government decides to hold the polls.
The EC has prepared a draft plan based on regional transport systems, weather conditions and the academic calendar. The proposal was prepared by Deputy Secretary of the Election Branch Md Monir Hossain.
Under the proposal, elections in the haor and north-eastern districts, including Sunamganj, Netrokona, Kishoreganj and parts of Habiganj, would be held between September and November when waterway communication is easier.
Polls in the hill districts of Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachhari, as well as Cox's Bazar and coastal areas including Hatia, Sandwip and parts of Barishal, are proposed between November and February.
