Eight Rohingyas, including three of a family, were killed in three separate landslides triggered by heavy rainfall at refugee camps in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, early Monday.
The first incident occurred around 1:10AM at Jamtoli Camp-15, where a hillside collapsed onto a shelter, killing Mohammad Kamal Hossai, 44, his wife Humaira Begum, 39, and their four-year-old son Mohammad Anas. Two others were also injured, according to the Fire Service.
About 35 minutes later, a seven-year-old boy, Ekram, died in another landslide at Kutupalong Camp-7.
Around 3:00AM, four people "including two women and two children "were killed and one person was injured in a landslide at Balukhali Camp-11.
Ukhiya Upazila administration said continuous rainfall has increased the risk of further landslides and urged residents in vulnerable areas to move to safer locations. Officials have been making public announcements to raise awareness.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department recorded more than 100 mm of rainfall in Cox’s Bazar over the past 24 hours and warned that heavy rain may continue for the next two days due to an active monsoon and a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.
