Mexico bowed out of the FIFA World Cup as England edged the co-hosts 3-2 in a thrilling Round of 16 clash despite playing the final 35 minutes with 10 men, securing a place in the quarter-finals.
England took the lead in the 36th minute through Jude Bellingham, who headed home after a swift move involving Jordan Pickford, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka. Just two minutes later, Bellingham doubled the advantage, finishing a slick one-two with Harry Kane after Elliot Anderson won back possession.
Mexico pulled one back before the break when Julián Quiñones volleyed home from a loose ball following a free-kick. Raúl Jiménez nearly equalised before halftime, but Jordan Pickford produced an excellent save to preserve England’s 2-1 lead.
England extended their advantage in the 60th minute as Harry Kane converted from the penalty spot. Mexico responded nine minutes later with a Raúl Jiménez penalty, but Thomas Tuchel’s side held on for victory after defender Jarell Quansah was sent off in the 54th minute.
