KHULNA, July 8: A Khulna court on Wednesday denied the petition for permanent bail to Adv M M Mujibur Rahman, District Awami League (AL) vice-president and District Bar Association former president, and ordered that he be sent to jail in a sedition case filed with Sonadanga Model Police Station (PS).
Acting Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Asadur Zaman passed the order. Earlier, on May 13 this year, the High Court had granted him eight weeks’ anticipatory bail in the case.
General Registration Officer (GRO) of Sonadanga Model PS Gopal Saha said that after Mujibur appeared before the court on Wednesday, his petition was rejected and he was later sent to jail.
Police sources said Mujibur had earlier been jailed in another sedition case filed with Khalishpur PS. After securing bail in that case, he allegedly remained fugitive for a long period.
According to the case statement, detectives of the Khulna Metropolitan Police arrested Mujibur on April 22, 2025, from the front of Khulna City Medical College Hospital under Sonadanga Model PS, and an examination of his mobile phone revealed communications with banned AL leaders and activists. Detective Branch Sub-Inspector Bidhan Chandra Roy filed the case with Sonadanga Model PS on November 8, 2025.
