A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced HM Rashed Sarkar, a junior licensing inspector of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), to five years rigorous imprisonment for taking a Tk 100,000 bribe to facilitate a pilot licence conversion and examination.

Judge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun of Dhaka Special Judge's Court-5 also fined the convict Tk 100,000.

According to the prosecution, Rashed demanded the bribe after cancelling the online application of commercial pilot Rakib Hasan, who sought to convert his Philippine Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) into a Bangladeshi licence. Following a complaint, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) arrested him red-handed with the bribe money during a sting operation at a restaurant in Uttara on December 6, 2019.

The ACC filed the case the same day. The court framed charges in March 2023 and, after recording testimony from 23 prosecution witnesses, found him guilty.

The court also ordered the recovered Tk 100,000 to be returned to the complainant and confiscated the convict's mobile phone, laptop, iPad and credit card in favour of the state.
