A landslide caused by continuous heavy rainfall hit the rear side of the Bandarban Sarbajanin Kendriya Buddhist Monastery early Friday, leaving parts of the monastery damaged.
The monastery's chief monk, Venerable Chandrajyoti Mahathero, said a loud noise was heard before large sections of the adjacent hill collapsed and slid into the monastery compound. Several valuable items inside the monastery were buried or damaged by mud and debris.
He added that a large amount of mud and water entered the monastery, creating panic among the monks and residents.
Expressing concern over the situation, the chief monk warned that further landslides could occur and urged the local administration to closely monitor the area and provide necessary assistance.
Following the incident, members of the monastery management committee removed some of the accumulated soil from the premises. However, a significant amount of mud remains, leaving the compound covered in sludge.
The committee has called on the municipality and relevant authorities to provide immediate support for clearing the debris and ensuring the safety of the monastery.
