GOPALGANJ: Judge Mohammad Shamsul Haque of the Gopalganj District and Sessions Judge Court on Tuesday noon sentenced a young man to life-term imprisonment and fined Tk 20,000, in default, to serve six more months in prison for killing his father.

According to the case details, Alim Kazi, the drug-addict son of Ismail Kazi of Charmanikdah Kazir Bazar area in Gopalganj Sadar Upazila, hit his father in the neck with a bottle in his hand on May 13, 2023. Ismail Kazi was taken to the Gopalganj 250-Bed General Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

In this incident, the other son of the deceased, Selim Kazi, filed a murder case. Later, after the police investigation and taking testimony, the judge handed down the verdict.

SIRAJGANJ: A court in Sirajganj on Monday sentenced five people, including a husband, wife and their daughter, to life imprisonment for the 2007 murder of date sap collector and trader Jahangir Sheikh.

The convicts were also fined Tk 100,000 each, with an additional six months' simple imprisonment in default of payment.
The convicts are Sujat Ali alias Tukka, his wife Selina Khatun, their daughter Fatema Khatun, Haidar Ali, and Hosne Ara Khatun, wife of Selim, all residents of Raiganj and Solanga areas of the district.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Laila Sharmin delivered the verdict in the Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court-1.
Additional Public Prosecutor Shamchuzzoha Shahanshah said Jahangir Sheikh, a resident of Hasna Village in Sirajganj Sadar, earned his livelihood by collecting and selling date palm sap.

During his business trips to Raiganj, he became acquainted with Sujat Ali and later began living at Sujat's house. While there, Jahangir developed a romantic relationship with Sujat's daughter, Fatema.

On April 3, 2007, Jahangir's wife was informed that he had been murdered and his body abandoned.

Following the incident, the victim's wife, Maya Khatun, filed a murder case with Solanga Police Station, naming Sujat Ali among the accused. The investigation was later transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) of police, which submitted a charge sheet against 10 people on May 5, 2008.

After an 18-year legal process, the court found five of the accused guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment.
