A delegation of protesting Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinees entered the Secretariat on Wednesday afternoon to submit a six-point demand, protesting the continuation of examinations despite severe weather, persistent rainfall and waterlogging in different parts of the country.
The delegation headed for the Secretariat from in front of the Education Building at around 4:45 pm. Earlier, students had gathered there around 4:00 pm, but police initially prevented them from advancing. Later, six representatives were allowed to enter the Secretariat for discussions with the authorities.
The students' six-point demand includes allowing candidates affected by the disaster to retake examinations if they wish; considering the higher score between the original and retaken examinations as the final result; awarding full marks for erroneous questions in question papers; rescheduling examinations after providing sufficient preparation time in view of the ongoing unstable situation; taking into account the unannounced changes in question patterns during marking; and stopping what they described as overly strict and confusing conduct by some teachers acting as "vigilant invigilators" during examinations.
Earlier, the protesters had demonstrated with a separate three-point demand that included the resignation of the Education Minister. However, the minister's resignation was not included in the current list of demands submitted by the delegation during the Secretariat meeting.
The protesting students said their next course of action would be announced after the outcome of the discussions with the relevant authorities.
