A man named Md. Mukul Kagaji has been sentenced to death for murdering his wife in Batiaghata upazila of Khulna. The accused was also fined Tk 50,000, n default of which he must serve five more years of rigorous imprisonment.
The convict is the son of Razzak Kagaji of Sora village in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira district.
Judge Md. Khurshid Alam of the Khulna Additional District and Sessions Judge Fourth Court pronounced the verdict on Wednesday (July 15). The court's bench assistant Md. Shah Alam confirmed the matter. The convict was absent in court when the verdict was announced.
According to court sources, Mukul married Mst. Hena Begum in 2013. Hena was the daughter of Md. Billal Hossain Mollik, a resident of Darogar Bhita area in Batiaghata. The couple had a son after their marriage.
However, Mukul used to abuse and beat Hena frequently. Hena informed her father about the abuse, but her father advised her to compromise for the sake of her family's future.
Court sources added that on September 8, 2016, Mukul beat Hena over a family dispute at their home in Shantinagar. Hena left the house to inform her aunt about the abuse.
When she reached Ashiker Bhita, Mukul attacked her from behind. He hit her on the head with a brick. He then fled the scene after ensuring her death.
The victim's father, Billal, filed a murder case with Batiaghata Police Station the following day. On October 31 of the same year, Batiaghata Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Bodhon Chandra Biswas submitted a charge sheet accusing Mukul Kagaji.
