Illegal and banned China Duari and electric nets were seized during drives at various points of the Padma River in Daulatdia under Goalanda upazila of Rajbari. Seized nets were destroyed by fire before public.
Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Md. Anwarul Islam Pilot confirmed the matter in a press note on Wednesday (July 15).
A team comprising the Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer and the Naval Police conducted the drives from Wednesday morning to noon.
The operation covered Daulatdia Ferry Ghat, Kusohata, and adjacent areas of the Padma River. The team seized 33 banned China Duari nets and 2,000 meters of electric nets. These nets were being used illegally to catch Jatka (Hilsa fish).
Later, the seized nets were burned and destroyed with the permission of Goalanda Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Anwarul Islam Pilot.
Daulatdia Naval Police Outpost In-charge Trinath Saha confirmed the incident. He stated that such drives will continue regularly to protect the ecological balance of the river and conserve Jatka.
He added that a strict stance against illegal nets and fishing during banned periods will remain in place.
