Immigration police have detained a leader of the banned Awami League, Lutfar Haidar Rasel, general secretary of Muktagacha Upazila Jubo League in Mymensingh, at Dhaka airport on Wednesday.
He was handed over to Muktagacha Police Station later that night.
According to sources, Rasel was trying to flee the country. During the Awami League regime, detained Rasel and Muktagacha upazila Juba-league President Mahbubul Alam Moni (Jamai Moni) formed a syndicate in Muktagacha. They amassed crores of taka through extortion, land grabbing, and taking over auto-rickshaw stands.
Following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, Jamai Moni, Lutfar Haidar Rasel, and others went into hiding. Multiple cases were filed against them after the fall of the government.
Immigration police detained Rasel at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after he remained in hiding for a long time and tried to leave the country.
Confirming the matter, Muktagacha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Kamrul Islam said Rasel was produced before the court following legal procedures after being handed over to the police.
Multiple cases are pending against him at Muktagacha Police Station, the OC added.
