A construction worker has died during renovation works at FC Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium. Al Jazeera confirmed.

In a short statement issued on Saturday, the Spanish football club deeply regretted the death of the worker following a workplace accident.

The club expressed its condolences to his family, friends, and co-workers.

Catalan police stated that the 54-year-old worker died after suffering a blow to the head. Authorities provided no further details regarding the circumstances of the incident.

Barcelona initiated a major overhaul of Camp Nou, Europe’s largest football venue, in 2023. Players returned to the stadium with limited spectator seating as construction continued.

The Catalan club, having won Spain’s La Liga title for the last two seasons, starts its new campaign on August 23 at Elche.

Their first home game at Camp Nou, which has been partially reopened during the ongoing works, is scheduled against Athletic Bilbao on August 27.

Once completed, the stadium will have a seating capacity of 105,000, retaining its position as the largest in Europe.
