A joint eviction drive on Sunday removed all illegal structures from Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital, including a makeshift prayer space.
The demolition operation began around 4pm. It was carried out by Public Works Department, Dhaka South City Corporation, Dhaka University (DU) and Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
The temporary prayer facility was built with a tarpaulin roof, prayer mats and ablution water drums. A signboard marked it as prayer space. People were collecting signatures to support building a mosque there. A group also held Friday prayers at the site.
Officials said the prayer facility, along with other illegal structures, was removed after a notice was issued on Thursday.
