3 awarded life imprisonment for abducting, robbing Indian driver

A court in Lalmonirhat has sentenced three persons to rigorous life imprisonment in a case over abduction, severe injury and robbery of an Indian truck driver in Patgram.
At the same time, they have been fined Tk 10,000, in default of which they will serve three more months of imprisonment. Each convict was separately sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment on charges of kidnapping. However, verdict stated that both sentences would run concurrently.
Judge S. M. Shafiqul Islam of the Lalmonirhat Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 pronounced the verdict on Monday, July 27 afternoon.
The convicts are Md. Sabuj Mia, son of Md. Shafiqul Islam from the Isfarmara (Sonarbhita) area of Patgram upazila; Md. Ramzan Ali, son of Mohammad Ali alias Bulu from Hadispara village in the same area; and Md. Ariful Islam alias Tanjid, son of Md. Shamsul Haq alias Shamsur Rahman from the Bhatiatari area.
According to court sources and the case statement, on August 21, 2019, an Indian truck loaded with stones broke down on the Burimari road after entering Bangladesh through the Banglabandha-Burimari land port in Panchagarh. Around 1:00AM, the accused enticed the truck driver, Laxminandar Singh, 37, with the promise of recovering the truck using a payloader or crane, and took him to a secluded place on a motorcycle.
Later, on August 22 around 3:00AM, he was taken to the Islampur Votbari area under Sreerampur Union in Patgram Upazila and severely injured with sharp weapons. At that time, the miscreants snatched 8,000 Indian rupees from him and fled, leaving him on the road. Later, with the help of patrol police and locals, the injured truck driver was rescued and admitted to Patgram Upazila Health Complex.
In connection with this incident, Md. Matiar Rahman, a village police member of Ward No. 1 of Sreerampur Union, filed a case with Patgram Police Station alleging kidnapping and robbery.
Following a long judicial procedure and review of witness testimonies and evidence, the court found the allegations against the accused proven beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted them under Sections 365 (kidnapping) and 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of the Penal Code. However, the convicted accused, Sabuj Mia, has been absconding since the beginning of the case.
After the verdict, state prosecutor Advocate Samsul Alam Milon said, "The state is satisfied with the verdict delivered by the court after a long hearing and taking of evidence. This verdict will serve as an example against serious crimes like abducting, injuring, and robbing a foreign national."
