Govt plans free edn for girls up to master's level: MP Abul Khayer

LAXMIPUR, July 27: Laxmipur -2 MP Abul Khayer Bhuiyan on Monday said the government plans to provide free education for girls up to the master's level, along with stipends, as part of its efforts to expand access to education and empower women.

Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the new hall room of Shyamganj High School in Laxmipur  Sadar Upazila, the lawmaker said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had announced the initiative, adding that the government has allocated its highest-ever budget to the education sector.

"The government is taking the highest measures to educate women. Women make up half of the country's population. If we fail to utilise their potential, the country cannot move forward," he said.

Bhuiyan also urged primary school teachers to be more attentive to their responsibilities and focus on improving the quality of education so that children receive a strong academic foundation.

He said the government is gradually ensuring religious education at the primary level so that students do not need to seek it elsewhere.

"Education is the backbone of a nation. We want to modernise the education system and make it science-based and compatible with global standards," he said.

The programme was chaired by Anwar Hossain Tipu, President of the Managing Committee of Shyamganj High School.

Among others present were former BNP convener of Sadar (West) Abdul Karim Bhuiyan Mizan, Headmaster Selim Hossain Jhontu, and former managing committee president Abdur Rahim.
