Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon on Thursday urged all not to commercialise or exploit the spirit of the July sacrifice, saying the enduring spirit of the Liberation War is embodied in the spirit of July’s sacrifice.

“The enduring spirit of the War of Independence is inherent in the spirit of the July sacrifice, and no one should forget the contribution of the Liberation War to Bangladesh’s political development,” he said.

The minister made the remarks while presiding over a publication unveiling ceremony, photo exhibition and discussion marking July Martyrs’ Day 2026 at the DFP Auditorium in the city.

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir attended the programme as the chief guest.

State Minister for Information Yasser Khan Choudhury and PSC member Dr Chowdhury Sayma Ferdous were present as special guests.
Addressing the function, Swapon said everyone must remain vigilant so that no one can derive any personal or political benefit from the spirit and achievements of the July Mass Uprising.

He said that whenever injustice and oppression intensified in society, people stood against them, inspired by the spirit of independence.

He called on all to work together to uphold justice, democracy and human values by embracing the spirit of July.

The information and broadcasting minister said the party’s former chairperson and former prime minister, late Begum Khaleda Zia, Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, he himself, and countless party leaders and activists had endured imprisonment and repression in the struggle to free the country from fascism.

He said that after the July Uprising, party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia departed this world with immense respect, along a path strewn with the flowers of the people’s love.

He said the people of the country had successfully carried out the anti-fascist movement under the banner of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. “Now the work of rebuilding the country is underway,” he added.

At the beginning of the programme, the guests unveiled a publication on July Martyrs’ Day and visited the photo exhibition."BSS
